Lately, I have been tormented by a change in what I view as the fundamental key of achievement… allowing someone to lose. Regardless of the platform life, business, etc… we all have ups and downs, and it’s our will to achieve that keeps us keeping on. I realize this can be a polarizing topic. I also acknowledge the pressure, paranoia, and over-stress that it puts on people, especially young ones. However, without losing, most people fail to seek out the knowledge and will power to improve.

Anyone who has had to deal with the modern workforce knows that we are dealing with a new age. For the most part, I see people who don’t deal with being held accountable. They reject the stress of situations, as well as the coaching and mentorship that people provide to get better. To simplify this observation, these people just haven’t been exposed to losing, or the lessons that come from it. I could go on and on about participation trophies, and going on Jerry Springer to blame your parents for all your troubles, but that wouldn’t be very productive…it would only champion the issue rather than the solution.

For those of you who are aware of this emerging trend, it is our job to bring back the power of losing. It falls on our shoulders to expose, teach, and mentor these lessons to not only survive this generation, but also re-establish the potential for our future.

We are all given the same 168 hours in a week. Though some of us have different personal lives, there is still a very broad spectrum in the amount of production that comes out of those 168 hours. There may be several reasons for this wide degree of differences, but for the most part, it comes down to how you are looking at your business. Do you see yourself as an employee to yourself, or an employer to others? The first indicator is always in what you define as your role in your business. If you’re the CEO, then make the decisions accordingly. If you’re not the CEO, then it is time to make the mental decisions you need to in order to become one.

In a conversation this week, a recent acquaintance of mine really simplified this concept. He said there is no position in a business called “The Business Owner”, so it is up to you to define the role appropriately. I completely agree, because after that transition, implementing the necessary steps to better time management will be no problem at all. However, there are numerous actions you can take to ensure that you are no longer just “keeping busy”. I have listed below some of the simplest strategies you can immediately implement to get you on your way.

One common reaction to a stressful economic climate is reflection. It is in these times that you recognize who your friends are, and who will be fighting by your side when you need it most.

For the better part of a year now, I have been very focused on getting involved with our local organizations that represent business: Organizations like different local Chambers of Commerce, membership groups, networking groups, etc. Obviously, one of the main reasons has been the opportunity to grow my business, but also I have made it a constant goal to offer assistance for the benefit of the business community whenever called upon to do so (This has been an especially tense topic with my wife...giving away too much free info J). I can’t really...

As a coach, one of the most common misconceptions I deal with is a business owner's interpretation of struggle. For some reason, over generations (especially in America), we have identified difficulty as a negative thing. We see our hurdles as signs that we have followed the wrong path and redirect our energies accordingly. I really could go on and on about specific examples of this theory, but more than likely you have either witnessed this unfortunate reality or have personally experienced it.

The good news is that if you have taken the time to read this, you might be open to the truth. Said plainly, life (epically in business) needs struggle

As most of you know, last weekend we had an event in Virginia Beach dealing with Social Media. For the most part, we had business owners and other professionals trying to learn how to use Social Media to enhance their online presence. Now, I really can’t say in detail what they were expecting before they got there, but I know for a fact these business owners took away more than they bargained for.
